When Demi entered the kitchen, she took one look at Katelyn’s dazed, confused, and extremely wary expression and knew without a doubt that Isabel was on shenanigans overdrive. Poor Kate, definitely the meekest of the proud-to-be-boring Anderson clan; she was probably believing every fabrication Isabel was serving her.

“Listen bitch, if you’re going to borrow my fuck-me red dress, at least wear some hooker shoes to complete the look. What are those, nurse’s shoes?” Demi addressed her college roommate.

Isabel laughed and then ran around the small kitchen table to squeeze Demetria in a bone-crushing hug. “What the hell? You didn’t tell me you were coming tonight! But thank God.”

Katelyn gawped like a fish out of water. Demi pulled back and waved boisterously.

“Hey, Katie. I see you finally got to meet my old friend Isabel.” Demi paused and put one palm up to her mouth for a dramatic aside, “Believe nothing you hear and only half what you see with this one.”

Isabel smacked her. “I have been perfectly behaved, haven’t I, Katelyn?”

Katelyn was still slightly shaking her head like she wasn’t sure if she was dreaming.

“We’re making cream cheese roll-ups with olives and jalapeños, and I found a few cans of oysters, which, whatever, beggars can’t be choosers. This guy is bachelor city here,” Isabel continued, going back to the kitchen table.

“That guy is my brother,” Katelyn finally interjected with a bite to her tone.

Demi and Isabel shared a quick amused look. They both knew Isabel was only here because Kyle was being browbeaten into it by Katelyn. The only person who seemed to think this was a secret was Kate. And possibly Dominic, who was being more obtuse than usual of late.

“Listen, let’s just clear the air here. Unless you already have?” Demi asked Isabel.

Izzy pursed her lips into an upside down smile. Her eyes twinkled, giving Demi her answer.

“Isabel is in no way interested in Dominic. She is not here to rekindle anything, even if Dom were interested, which he would not be, is not—”

“And ever shall not, world without end,” Isabel interrupted in an irreverent sing-song.

“Iz,” Demi reprimanded. She turned back to a scowling Kate. “It is totally unnecessary to shove Kyle at her.”

“I think my brother’s genuinely interested in her. He is,” Kate turned to Isabel and nodded a few earnest times.

Isabel shrugged, popped an olive in her mouth, and went back to slathering the next tortilla with cream cheese.

“I don’t mind,” she said around the olive. “Something to pass the time.”

“Excuse me?” Katelyn demanded, her hand on her hip. “A lot of women would be happy to have a guy like Kyle interested in them!”

Isabel made a few choking sounds of holding back laughter. Demi pushed her hair back and tried again. “Point is, Dom and Izzy do not want to be together, so you can stop busting my brother’s balls, and stop shoving your brother at her.”
